Birds, Butterflies and Ziplines....Oh My! The Sequel

Well, as promised here are more beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds from our recent trip to ‘Lindo’ Mindo, nestled in a protected cloud forest in northwestern Ecuador.

We understand that Mindo was undamaged by the 7.1 earthquake that hit deep in the jungle of eastern Ecuador on Thursday, August 12, 2010.  Thankfully, we had been in the [...]

A Big BIENVENIDO to Gringo's Newest Contributor!

A few of you all have mentioned to me that posts are getting a little sparse around these here parts . . .

Well, you’re right.  Life, as most of you are already quite aware, is a constantly changing thing.  The time I had at one time been able  to set aside for [...]

Tungurahua's At It Again!

Whew! What a weekend!

As you may have seen in the news, Mt. Tungurahua began erupting once again this past Friday (May 28, 2010) at 8:47 A.M. Wouldn’t you know it, we just happened to be in Baños at the time! (For more info on Baños, click here.)

The explosions rattled windows and doors at [...]

A PC Tower You Can Fit In Your Carry-On? The Answer to a Gringo's Dream . . .

One of the things I had intended to do on our recent trip to the States was bring back my old computer tower. I wanted to avoid having to buy one here if I could. In Ecuador you’ll find yourself shelling out a bit more cash for a quality machine. “No problem,” I [...]

Episode XI: Return of the Gringo

Wow!  I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I’ve posted! Taking care of things while we were in the States turned out to be much more time intensive than I had expected.  Of course, given the fact that this is a  blog about life in Ecuador it would have seemed a little funny [...]

Driving in Ecuador: Seatbelt Recommended . . .

Recently I completed a series of posts detailing what an adventure it was to get our Ecuadorian driver’s license. Now that we have it, was it worth the trouble? That would be a resounding, unqualified, and definite YES! We now have an idea of what the mythical Icarus must have felt the first time he [...]

Tungurahua Update: Pretty Big One Yesterday . . .

While we were out and about yesterday we witnessed one of the biggest eruptions we’ve yet seen from Tungurahua.  The Instituto Geofísico website said that there were eruptions that threw ash up to a level of 3,ooo meters above the level of the crater.  This must have been one of them.

It was funny because in the [...]

Carnival in Ecuador: It's Survival of the Fittest . . .

With all the craziness of preparing for our trip to the States and “other stuff” I didn’t think I’d have time this week to do what I mentioned in Monday’s post, i.e., sharing a few Carnival experiences from the Gringo perspective. Insomnia being what it is, suddenly I find I have some time.

I’ll say right [...]

Snowfall in the States, Ashfall in Riobamba

Admittedly, this doesn’t compare to the tons of snow parts of the U.S. has been receiving.

The futility of car washing . . .

However, with all the talk of blizzards and snow and such, I thought you all might like to get a look at what we get to wake up with most mornings.  Unlike snow, [...]
