Today’s Kichwa Word of the Day is actually quite a few words. Let’s take a look at the members of the family starting with the word in English followed by its equivalent in Kichwa.
Father = Tayta (tie-tah), Yaya (yah-yah)
Mother = Mama (Yup, same word we use in English. “Mama” seems to pop up in a lot of languages.)
Husband = Kusa (koo-sah)
Wife = Warmi (wahr-mee)
Child = Wawa (wah-wah. Remember that one? We covered it yesterday.)
Son = Churi (choo-ree)
Daughter = Ushushi (oo-shoo-shee. That’s what it is here, anyway. Other areas use “Ushi”.)
At this point we run into something interesting about Kichwa. Whatever sex you happen to be will determine what you call your brothers or sisters.
If you are a male you will call your siblings:
Brother = Wawki (wow-kee)
Sister = Pani (pah-nee)
If you are female you would call your siblings the following:
Brother = Turi (too-ree)
Sister = Ñaña (nyah-nyah)
Just for fun, here are the words for “Man” and “Woman” as well.
Man = Kari (kah-ree)
Woman = Warmi (wahr-mee)
So there you have the members of the family.
Katik post kama,
Until the next post,
Mike
